VR 'S/SX/VFDA' Flat Wagon

Victorian Railways S Flat Wagon

Introduced into service by the VR in 1925 from the famed American Car and Foundry Works in New York USA, the 'S' flat wagon and the related 'E' wagons were the basis of numerous wagon conversions.

The 'S' flat wagon achieved its greatest numbers during World War II, when it found favour with the armed forces for the transportation of military vehicles. Following World War II, considerable numbers were used as the basis for petrochemical tankers and GY style (rebuilt) 'E' wagons. A few 'S' wagons survived into the 1970’s and one wagon was recoded 'VFDA' in the 1979 national four letter recoding exercise.
